KwaDukuza municipality allocates R300 000 for traffic light repairs
Repair work on half of damaged traffic lights already completed.
The KwaDukuza Municipality (KDM) is taking steps to repair damaged traffic lights in the region.
An allocation of R300 000 for the project was approved during the council sitting on October 31, Ward 30 councillor Jack Abrahams confirmed.
KDM spokesperson Sifiso Zulu said repair work was already underway, with some traffic lights fully restored, others in the process of being repaired, and a few awaiting the appointment of service providers for completion.
“The municipality repairs traffic lights on behalf of the provincial Department of Transport and then claims a refund. While the funds have been allocated, there was a process to follow.
“Once a problem has been identified, the municipality engages in a procurement process. In this case, certain steps were necessary to augment the funds in the relevant vote,” Zulu explained.
Mayor Ali Ngidi recently conducted an inspection of damaged traffic lights in Ballito. Following this, the municipal manager announced the deployment of traffic officers during peak hours to manage congestion as part of a broader traffic management plan, which is set to commence later this week.
Out of the 10 sets of damaged traffic lights, five have been fully repaired, with repainting in progress. Four sets are still undergoing repairs, while one remains unattended due to funding limitations.
