More than R404 000 has been spent protecting the incomplete Woodmead taxi rank in Shakaskraal from vandalism since March 2022. The site was abandoned in 2017.
KwaDukuza municipality is now exploring repurposing options for the facility. Located along the R102 near Sasko Bakery, the taxi rank was originally due for completion in October 2016, but was halted in 2017 because the company awarded the tender, TNL Property Development, allegedly ran out of money.
The project, initially intended to address growing transport needs in KwaDukuza, has been under council review for some time.
In February, council members requested a detailed report on the facility’s security expenses. It was revealed that more than R404 000 had been spent on unarmed guards since March 2022 to prevent vandalism.
To determine the facility’s future, council called for a comprehensive business plan. Submitted in mid-2023, the plan outlined funding requirements and proposed repurposing strategies.
One proposal suggests the integration of the site into the broader Woodmead development plan to enhance community safety services such as fire and rescue operations and increased police presence.
This would bring essential services closer to nearby communities and align with the area’s anticipated residential and commercial growth.
Private developers have reportedly shown interest in incorporating the facility into mixed-use projects that combine retail and housing, targeting first-time home buyers.
