uMkhonto weSizwe Party makes breakthrough with Shakaskraal by-election win

With over 60% of the vote, Doeshiee Govender becomes the first MK councillor in the district.

Doeshiee Govender will become the first uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party councillor in KwaDukuza after claiming 62.25% of yesterday’s (April 2) Shakaskraal by-election vote.

Govender was the incumbent in Ward 28 after having resigned his post as a sitting African National Congress (ANC) councillor, held for two terms, and switching allegiance to the MK.

His resignation triggered the by-election.

Renuka Singh and Lochan Munilal cast their votes.

Govender’s main competition came in the form of ANC candidate, New Mlondo, who sought to keep the ward yellow and green, but was ultimately unsuccessful.

Shakaskraal residents once again voted in favour of Govender with 1 392 (62.25%) of the 2 236 valid votes cast in his favour.

Voter turnout was just under 60%.

Govender thanked his supporters and party members after the result and was bullish about the local growth of the MK going forward.

“Come 2026, the MK will wipe the entire district,” he said.

“I also want to extend my heartfelt gratitude to Saps for ensuring a peaceful election. Over the past 90 days of our campaign, whenever we called them, they responded in numbers to maintain safety and peace.”

Nokwanda Banda, a very proud voter.
