ANC squashes rumours of KwaDukuza mayor’s dismissal
Mayor Ali Ngidi has endured a rocky first seven months in office and mounting calls for his removal.
The ANC has denied rumours that KwaDukuza mayor Muzi Ngidi will be removed, amid mounting allegations and civic calls for his resignation.
Regional African National Congress (ANC) spokesperson Thandeka Mkhize said only the provincial task team could make this call and there has been no formal communication on the matter.
She was responding to widespread rumours that the positions of mayor, his deputy and the speaker are all under scrutiny.
“There are proper ANC structures for handling these matters. It would be disappointing if issues discussed in meetings are leaked to the public. As it stands, these are just rumours spread by people who oppose the mayor,” said Mkhize.
Ngidi, elected mayor on November 5 after Lindile Nhaca’s removal, has been under intense scrutiny following a troubled first seven months in office.
His term has been marked by an electricity crisis, the R35.7-million municipal embezzlement scandal and the outcry following his non-attendance of key community meetings. He also faces allegations of misconduct, including the irregular hiring of personal security guards and the use of municipal vehicles.
A leaked invoice revealed that more than R173 000 was paid in March for private security at his home. The municipality defended the cost, citing safety threats and proper tender processes.
Further controversy arose after a council report showed more than R497 000 was spent on hired vehicles for Ngidi, and more than R527 000 for the deputy mayor, between November and March. This was described as a temporary measure while deciding whether to repair or replace existing vehicles, which have since been fixed.
Amid growing dissatisfaction, the ANC in KwaZulu-Natal announced an urgent investigation into alleged mismanagement at KwaDukuza municipality.
In a joint public letter, civic groups including the KwaDukuza Organised Residents Alliance (Kora), Docrra and the iLembe Civic Action Movement accused Ngidi of avoiding community engagement and silencing dissent. They are demanding his resignation or removal through a vote of no confidence in council.
