R200-million for overdue Groutville stormwater repairs
Twenty-six critical projects will be targeted to improve infrastructure.
KwaDukuza’s Ward 29 (Groutville) is undergoing major infrastructure upgrades as part of a R200-million flood recovery initiative, following the devastation caused by the 2022 floods.
The floods left several internal roads severely damaged and highlighted serious shortcomings in the stormwater systems.
In response, government has allocated funding to implement 26 critical projects focused on rehabilitating infrastructure and improving flood resilience.
Ward councillor and deputy mayor Njabulo Cele said six major projects have already been launched, prioritising stormwater infrastructure and internal road upgrades.
“These initiatives are part of a concerted effort to address the long-standing challenges related to poor stormwater management, which have left residents vulnerable during heavy rainfall,” said Cele.
He said these projects form part of a broader strategy to rebuild and strengthen key infrastructure in the ward.
“This is a direct response to the historical flooding challenges in our community and we are committed to ensuring better access, improved safety and long-term development for our residents.”
The upgrades are expected to significantly reduce flood risk and improve travel within the area, particularly during the rainy season.
