Positive changes at Ballito licensing office but more to be done

Queueing residents can now sit inside, but there remain questions around staffing capacity.

Staff shortages at the Ballito Licensing Centre continue to frustrate residents, despite the recent positive addition of new chairs to the waiting area.

The move comes after weeks of public complaints about having to queue outside in the sun at the Nokukhanya Luthuli House building. On Tuesday, Ward 6 councillor Ayabonga Zwane conducted an oversight visit and welcomed the development.

“There were quite a number of residents at the office, and it was good to see them seated inside while waiting for service. While this is a positive outcome, I will continue to engage with the relevant officials to resolve all the issues that are experienced by patrons who use the services of the licensing department,” said Zwane.

The waiting area inside can now accommodate about 20 people.

Beyond the sun exposure, there has been growing community frustration about long waits and operational issues at the centre, particularly the assignment of just one teller. Zwane said residents have complained to him about surprise closures in the past when the teller was off sick.

“One resident told me that she had visited three days in a row and was turned away because of the staff member’s sickness,” said Zwane.

“The department director has since confirmed that a relief teller has been hired to fill in when needed.”

The KwaDukuza municipality had not responded at the time of publication.
