KwaDukuza council chambers to receive R12-million upgrade
Seating capacity will be extended from 60 to 100, among other upgrades.
KwaDukuza municipality has launched a R12-million project to expand its council chambers, increasing seating capacity from 60 to 100.
The expansion aims to provide space for a larger council and improve administrative efficiency. The municipality said the current chambers can no longer host ordinary sittings due to the increased number of party representatives following recent demarcation reforms.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony on Monday, KwaDukuza mayor Siduduzo Gumede described the project as a reflection of the municipality’s vision for growth and progress.
“We appreciate the progress and hope that the work will be done as planned. Ours is to play oversight to ensure the project is completed on time. The municipality deserves this moment due to its growth potential and commitment to fulfilling its vision,” said Gumede.
Rod’s Construction has been appointed as the main contractor, with UrbanRu (Pty) Ltd responsible for project implementation. The expansion is expected to be completed within seven months.
During the current term of office, KwaDukuza Council comprises 59 councillors, up from 57 in the previous term, forcing meetings to be held at the KwaDukuza Town Hall due to limited space.
The upgrade will involve the demolition of internal walls and existing ablution facilities to allow for a new layout. Planned improvements include structural expansion, new roof trusses and tiles, upgraded lighting systems, access control gates, data cabling, air conditioning, rainwater harvesting and new fixed and movable furniture.
