R6-Million upgrade under way at Salt Rock municipal building
The upgrade should allow for pressure to be eased on the Ballito offices.
An upgraded Salt Rock municipal building will ease pressure on the Ballito office and improve the efficiency of the law enforcement unit.
This is the intent behind a R6-million upgrade, launched two weeks ago, which aims to bring new life to the dilapidated building near Salt Rock main beach. The renovated building will allow the licensing section to return to Salt Rock from its current home in Ballito, while the marine safety unit is also expected to move in, enabling a quicker response to coastal incidents.
Salt Rock councillor Privi Makhan welcomed the project’s long-awaited start.
“This building was damaged during the April 2022 floods and for more than three years we have been calling for its repair. We are happy the work has finally begun and hope it will be completed on time,” said Makhan.

KwaDukuza mayor Siduduzo Gumede urged the contractor to ensure the upgrade meets its deadline and said the municipality was determined to end the trend of delayed and poorly managed projects.
“This comes at a time when we are turning a new leaf and it starts with this project. Let nine months be nine months.
“Many of our projects have failed due to poor management, but I am hopeful this one will succeed. The contractor is one of us, from KwaDukuza, and I believe she has the people of KwaDukuza at heart,” said Gumede.
