Road erosion in Ballito street threatens homes

Residents anxiously await a municipal solution but say little has been done.

Road erosion along Celtis Close in Ballito is threatening two nearby properties and continues to worsen due to inaction by the municipality.

Ridge View board of trustees member Luke Redman said the erosion is now dangerously close to a boundary fence he installed earlier this year. The issue was reported to KwaDukuza municipality with assistance from Ward 30 councillor Jack Abrahams, but no feedback has been received following an on-site inspection in June.

The road erosion is getting closer to the fence of Ridge View.

Redman said the erosion began in November 2024 and has progressed into a large sinkhole.

“We have been forced to place rubble and collapsed concrete blocks to prevent the erosion from reaching the fence.

“With each heavy rain, more of the road collapses and the erosion spreads further,” he said.

Luke Redman shows the makeshift repair solution.

Redman said the complex has long flagged stormwater management as a contributing factor, with documented communication to the municipality dating back to 2018.

“Seven years ago was the last time the municipality cleared trees and drains to allow proper water runoff.

“During the inspection, they said they would dig up the stormwater system to check if it was functioning but we have heard nothing since,” he said.

Abrahams confirmed the inspection took place and warned of potential structural damage.

“The erosion is dangerously close to properties in Celtis, Ridge View and Forestville. This needs urgent attention,” he said.

Redman said he was frustrated by the lack of response.

“We have been told it would be fixed, but a year later, nothing has been done.”

The municipality had not responded at the time of publication.
