Hundreds of Mandeni households are gaining water access as iLembe invests nearly R50-million in expanding the Macambini water scheme.
Phase 5C of the project has now been completed, delivering 65km of water reticulation and metered yard taps to 890 households across Wards 2, 3 and 9.
Phase 5D is 95% complete and is expected to extend water access to a further 380 households in Wards 3 and 9 by the end of April.
Progress was outlined during the Thuma Mina campaign, which visited eMaromeni (Ward 3) last Friday, giving residents an opportunity to raise concerns about service delivery and infrastructure.
Led by district mayor Thobani Shandu, the visit focused on transparency and practical solutions. Shandu acknowledged recent water interruptions caused by ageing infrastructure and pump failures, explaining that reservoirs must reach required levels before supply can resume.
In response to Auditor-General concerns around “non-revenue water”, municipal teams were on site to legalise connections and register accounts. Many residents also applied for indigent support.
Sanitation improvements are also underway, with a toilet desludging list being compiled. However, a full sewer system remains a long-term goal, with costs exceeding R1 billion – more than half the district’s R1.9 billion budget.
“We are here not just to talk, but to work. By legalising connections and completing these water phases, we are restoring dignity through reliable service delivery,” said Shandu.
The campaign forms part of the municipality’s efforts to address service gaps, strengthen community engagement and expand access to essential infrastructure.
