Sykes surfs with the best
The Salt Rock surfer is now in round three of the King of the Groms competition in France.
Local grom Shane Sykes is currently in 13th place at the King of the Groms competition in France.
Sykes made it to the international finals after winning the South African King of the Groms.
The competition is an interesting one, with each of the surfers compiling and uploading a surfing video online. Sykes’s video was voted the best in SA and won him a ticket to shred some waves in France.
The top five SA videos were then judged by Durban’s own Travis Logie, Zigzag’s Alan van Gysen and former surfer Paul Canning. The judges were most impressed by Sykes video.
Sykes is up against 17 other surfers, all aged under 16, vying for the title of King of the Groms. The surfers will have three rounds to surf in, after which the three best waves of each surfer will be used to make an overall ranking.
The top three surfers will then face off in a grand final.
Round three is currently under way and Sykes will need to get near perfect wave scores in order to advance to the final.
Leonardo Fioravanti from Italy is currently in first place with a combined three wave score of 27.30 out of a possible 30.
