Over 200 adults and children waited patiently as the staff of St Vincent de Paul’s care centre prepared food and packages for them on Wednesday morning.
The Ballito Lions donated money to provide the hot meal which was served to the most impoverished people of Nkobongo.
The care centre has a hospice for terminally ill people, a safe house for abused women and children, a day care clinic, feeding schemes for orphans, children and indigent adults and a meal delivery service for the sick and bedridden.
St Vincent’s centre and its programmes in the area have become a lifeline for many. Orphans and children are fed twice a week as well as elderly, incapacitated adults, aunties and grannies who look after orphans.
On Mondays and Wednesdays, adults receive food packs to take home. A select few of the most destitute, around 70 people, receive monthly ration packs. The food is collected from various supermarkets and volunteers sort the food into parcels.
The Lions have worked with St Vincent for years and were happy to donate funds to the programme. They are hoping to donate towards another feeding day in December.
Noel O’Connor, a former chairman and current fundraiser and committee member of the St Vincent de Paul Society, was grateful for the help they received from the Lions.
“I take my hat off to the lads, they have given us tremendous support over the years,” said O’Connor.
