Top awards for canine officers

Best K9 unit in the province!

The North Coast can rest easy knowing that Umhlali SAPS’s K9 unit are the best in KZN.
The local dog unit received the award for the best K9 unit in the province on Friday, October 25.
Captain Snothi Dlamini, the head of Umhlali’s K9 unit, was ecstatic after his team received the award.
“It is the first time we have won the trophy and no-one will take it from us, we have it and we are keeping it,” he said with a smile.
Dlamini highlighted the criteria on which the award is given.
“It is based on the unit that recovered the most firearms and vehicles and the most arrests that were made,” said Dlamini.
The unit has 14 members including himself and 10 dogs that are trained in different disciplines.
“One dog is trained to find drugs while the other nine are trained for patrol work and sniffing out explosives,” he explained.
Dlamini praised the work ethic of his members and their commitment to serving a large area of operation.
“I am very happy with my men, they work very hard.

“Even if they are on leave and there is something to be done, they come out,” he said.

The unit patrols an area from Phoenix all the way to Sundumbili. The members are available 24 hours a day and the whole team comes together when a big operation is carried out.
“When we are needed in KwaMashu or other areas around Durban we also assist there.”
Dlamini believes in leading by example and works with his team on all their operations.
“The thing that motivates them is that I am always on the ground with them,” he said.
The Captain would love to have a few more dogs to help the unit on patrols.
For now, they have definitely made good work of the resources that they have.
