Turning your house into a home

Sphesihle Gumede is this year’s winner of The Entrepreneur competition.

Groutville’s carpentry and cupboard manufacturing company Superior Kitchens promises their customers quality workmanship and a complete job within two weeks.
Owner of Superior Kitchens and carpenter Sphesihle Gumede is this year’s winner of The Entrepreneur competition.
Gumede learned his trade from his uncle Bheki Makhathini and helped him run the business up until he passed away in 2008. Gumede has since grown his business dramatically.
“I have been designing kitchens since 2006 when I was still in Nonhlevu Secondary School. My uncle taught be how to make them but I learned designing in school,” said Gumede.
He now works with his full time employee Lindo Mthembu but said he often has to hire three or four casual workers because of the amount of work he gets every month.
“No matter how many orders I still have to live up to my promise to have completed their work and be out of their house in two weeks.”
Gumede said the business management skills that he got from entering the The Entrepreneur competition are worth more than the prizes. He described the experience as being invaluable and said he was already starting to reap off the benefits from the exposure he received.
“Before the competition I used to get work in mostly Groutville and other local townships but since the competition I have been getting calls from people in Sheffield who want me to design kitchens for them,” said Gumede.
He recalled the days when him and Mthembu used to carry all their tools on their heads because they did not have a car. He said it was thanks to the support from his family and his bishop, Sabelo Mdletshe who encouraged him to persevere.
