Thanks to a helping hand from African Bank, a Groutville entrepreneur is providing a much-needed service to her community.
Nobuhle Nxumalo operates Dominion Internet Café at Groutville High School with her assistant Phindile Nkwanyana.
The café was opened two months ago as one of African Bank’s corporate social investment projects, which also saw neighbouring schools provided with wireless internet and computer skills training.
“Business was slow in the beginning but we went to schools to market ourselves. Now we have regulars who come in and use the internet, from teachers and students who type work, to community members who need to do research,” said Nxumalo.
She said the café was desperately needed in Groutville, with the nearest one having been in Stanger.
“It is vital to have computer skills today. Now, our neighbours and friends do not have to pay taxi fare to use the internet. We are right here.”
African Bank’s Nathan Wit said Nxumalo and Nkwanyana are doing a fantastic job.
“It is great to see one of our projects take off the way this one has.”
The café has a partnership with Sims Recycling in Compensation, which allows them to collect and sell refurbished computers, cellphones and laptops.
“Anyone who would like to bring in their old gadgets is welcome,” said Nxumalo.
