A market with a difference

Tiffany’s Shopping Centre's new market starts this Saturday.

Most people are on their third or fourth dream between three and six in the morning, not Tuck Khumalo.
“I am at my most creative then. That is when I have my most brilliant ideas and start sending my colleagues emails. I love it,” said Soweto-born Khumalo.
The professional fleamarketer was instrumental in the establishment of Johannesburg’s iconic Bruma Lake Flea Market, widely regarded as South Africa’s first and biggest flea market to date.
Now, he is bringing his magic to the North Coast.
The Tiffany’s Market, situated in the basement level of Tiffany’s Shopping Centre in Salt Rock, will open on November 30 with more than 30 stallholders stocking everything from food to crafts.
“This will be a traditional flea market and we want to support people from our community who hand make their products. The consumers must be given a wide range of products to choose from and this is what we will offer.”
Khumalo brings with him more than 20 years of experience in the fleamarketing industry.
“Bigger companies tend to look down on those with smaller businesses. What is beautiful about a flea market is the ability to negotiate your prices, you can browse until you find what you want. Flea markets are here to stay.”
The Tiffany’s Market will trade on a Saturday and Sunday throughout December. Depending on the response the market will then open on either a Saturday or Sunday from January next year.
Khumalo said he does not intend to bring competition, but choice.
“We have big plans to boost the community and I am looking forward to working on the North Coast. We want to promote the area. This will be a market with a difference.”
