Policeman crashes car – alleged drunk driving

A breathalyser test allegedly showed the policeman's blood alcohol level at 0.49.

A uniformed SAPS police officer, believed to be from Phoenix, was involved in a crash with Ballito man Jason Chapman today while allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol.

According to Chapman, the man identified as G Naidoo, was driving a white Corolla which crashed into his bakkie on Dolphin Crescent, breaking the bakkie’s back axle.

Eye-witness Murray Rattray was driving behind Chapman when the accident occurred.

“I asked him (the offending driver) what he was doing, and he said he had fallen asleep at the wheel,” said Rattray.

According to Chapman traffic officers arrived at the scene shortly afterwards. A breathalyser test allegedly showed the policeman’s blood alcohol level at 0.49, more than twice the legal driving limit.

KDM traffic department confirmed that a case of driving under the influence has been opened.
