Dancing on the West Side
Ballito's Simone Mann is ripping up the stage at the Playhouse.
She’s young, she’s sexy and she sure can dance.
Ballito’s Simone Mann is ripping up the stage at the Playhouse production of The West Side Story this December.
The musical is set in the Upper West Side neighborhood in New York City in the mid-1950’s, an ethnic, blue-collar neighbourhood.
The ‘Romeo and Juliet’ style tragic love story explores the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The members of the Sharks from Puerto Rico are taunted by the Jets, a Polish-American working-class group.
The young protagonist, Tony, one of the Jets, falls in love with Maria, the sister of Bernardo, the leader of the Sharks.
The starcrossed lovers are on opposite sides of a community polorised by hatered and anger.
The dances will mesmorise you, the music delight you and the sets will astonish you. Crawford College North Coast’s dance studies teacher Simone dances as one of the Jet’s girlfriends.
Simone’s previous performances include Janice Honeyman’s ‘Showboat’ in Paris, The Barnyard’s ‘Clint & Co Travelling Band’ and she toured France and China with Richard Loering’s African Footprint.
Win 2 double tickets to Westside Story. SMS “Simone” to 41685 (Sms’s cost R1.50). Competition closes Sunday, December 7.
