DA Mandela banner goes missing

Councillor wants rival party to answer for banner 'theft'

A Democratic Alliance banner put up as a sign of respect for late former president Nelson Mandela has gone missing, and the party wants answers.

Councillor Brian Jayanathan said the banner, which was erected at the Belvedere Peace Park in Tongaat, went missing on Saturday.

The banner had the words ‘Let the Legacy of Mandela Live On’ on it.

Jayanathan, who has opened a case of theft at the Tongaat SAPS, said the banner was covered by a similar one from a rival party, before it went missing.

“On Sunday we had to hold our event at the park without a banner. At another event on Monday we we had no choice but to use the other party’s banner for the lighting of candles.”

Jayanathan said it is shocking and disrespectful that anyone would steal the banner.

“In this time of reconciliation and embracing social cohesion, where we shall never ever be divided by race, religion, creed or political affiliation, we need to be tolerance and understanding and respect the rights of others.”

If anyone has information about the missing banner contact Tongaat SAPS on 032-944 9900 or Jayanathan on 083 555 0886.
