Dog box cleaned out

More than 300 people visited the Ballito SPCA Dog Box night market on Friday.

More than 300 people visited the Ballito SPCA Dog Box market on Friday evening, making the inaugural event a resounding success.
Shop manager, Maggie Anderson, was blown away by the support the market received.
“We had a very good turn-out, even better than we had hoped for. We started at 5pm and locals came and bought items before they went home, ” said Anderson.
The volunteers did not really know what to expect as it was the first time they had had an official market.
With only 10 volunteers present, the group was almost overwhelmed during the first hour of the market.
After the original rush died down, the market moved indoors as it started to rain.
Considering the outcome of the sale, Anderson would like to plan another market for Easter next year.
The Dog Box is stocked with a variety of donated items, from clothing and books to other household objects.
“Everything is donated by the public, which makes it so special because people could sell it themselves, but they choose to donate it to us,” she said. Items that cannot be sold are given to other charities.
All the money that is raised by the store is used to run the Dolphin Coast SPCA.
Having been around for over 10 years, the shop has moved around Ballito, but finally settled at the Ballito Boulevard centre where it is open during weekdays and on Saturdays.
