Thief plummets to death at Tongaat mall

The beheaded body of a man who plunged into his death at the Tongaat Mall construction site was recovered this morning

According police the unidentified man whose badly decomposed body was found by the SAPS Search and Rescue team on Tuesday was running from the Reaction Unit SA security guards when he disappeared into the mall two weeks ago.

“He snatched a gold chain from a woman outside the Golden Sun supermarket and the security guards who were chasing him lost him when he entered the cordoned off construction site,” said Tongaat SAPS Lt Mandy Govender.

She said they suspected he must have fallen from the top floor into the underground parking where his beheaded body was found with the gold chain.

“The owner of the chain did tell the police about the robbery but she did not lay an official complaint so we have no way of knowing whether she wants her chain back,” said Govender.

The Tongaat Mall construction site remains cordoned off until the labour department completes its investigation on what might have led to its collapse on November 19. The collapse injured dozens of construction workers and killed two.
