A burglar grabbed a Ballito man through his security gate, attempting to strangle him and force him to open his door on Wednesday, January 22.
Kyle Meyer had returned to his home on the corner of Ashley Road and Roger Place from work on Wednesday afternoon when he heard his front door’s security gate rattling.
“I thought it was my fiancee coming home so I went to open the door,” he said.
A burglar then grabbed him through the gate around the throat while screaming at him to open the door. The incident occurred at around 4.35pm.
“It was a life or death situation. He was either going to strangle me or I had to let him in,” he said.
But Meyer hit the burglar through the fence, managing to knock him off.
Then two armed men climbed out of a Silver Audi which was parked outside and walked towards the door.
At that point Meyer slammed the door, hit his panic button and contacted his colleague Quentin Power from the Specialised Rescue Unit. Power then notified SAPS of the attempted burglary.
The four men were arrested later that afternoon by Tongaat and Umhlali SAPS after a house break inWestbrook.
The group had tried to rob a house but community members in Westbrook notified Alpha Security via the community Whatsapp group.
Together with Umhlali and Tongaat SAPS units, one of the men was arrested in the Silver Audi near Zimbali, while three others were found in the bush near Westbrook.
The men are believed to have been involved in a number of other house breakings in the Ballito, Salt Rock, Umhlali and Tongaat areas.
According to Tongaat SAPS communications officer, Lieutenant Mandy Govender, one of the men, Sifiso Wunase Masinga (40) was charged with being in possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition.
An investigation is underway to try and link the men to other cases.
Meyer believes a stronger security presence could help lessen crime in the area.
“SAPS could have a few more patrols in our area, as well as the security companies, so that criminals are aware that they are being watched,” he said.
