The Courier’s resident snake catcher David Hoehler caught and released a Southern African Python (Python natalensis) on Monday.
The female snake was found inside a chicken coop near Cranbrook, just south of Stanger on Saturday afternoon. The snake had caught and eaten a chicken and had given the residents a bit of a scare.
Hoehler, along with the Dolphin Coast SPCA, went to rescue the snake.
The python was released inside the Rain Farm game reserve on the banks of the Umhlali River. Hoehler and Rain Farm game ranger Gary Cameron measured the reptile before letting it go at its new home.
The python measured in at 2.7 metres, which is not big for their species. The Southern African Python can grow to be as long as 6 metres.
“This should be a good place for the snake, they like this kind of habitat,” said Hoehler.
