Not your average vet

A triathlete, mountain biking, scuba diving and salsa!

Dr Kerri Sachs is a woman of very many talents.
When she is not caring for her animal patients at the Ballito Vet Hospital, Kerri prefers to be outdoors.
She is a triathlete and loves mountain biking on the Holla Trails, or scuba diving. If she still has energy left after that she takes to the dance floor as a salsa instructor.
“I am still looking for a place in Ballito to try out some moves!” said Kerri (she is very quick to stress it is Kerri with an ‘i’).
Kerri joined the Ballito Vet Hospital at the beginning of the year after qualifying as a veterinary surgeon in November last year.
The Johannesburg native studied at the University of Pretoria and said she had always planned to move to Ballito.
Whirling around her consulting room, Kerri said she felt at home around her second day in Ballito.
“What is not to love about this place? The weather, the beach, I could go on. I live in a gorgeous garden cottage in Salt Rock and make sure I take the Ocean Drive route to work, so I can look at the beach.”
Her electric blue eyes lit up when she was asked the familiar question: do you love animals?
“I became a vet because I love animals, but also for the love of medicine and science. I want to do the best I can for every animal I treat. I love the challenge of figuring out what is wrong with an animal and then being able to treat it.”
The most difficult part of the job for Kerri is when her patient’s owners are unable to afford treatment.
“It is heart breaking, knowing there is something I can do but not being able to do it. I would love to help every single animal that needs it, but I know that is just not possible.”
Kerri does not have any pets of her own yet and cannot wait to bring some pooches home with her.
