Poisoned dog’s owner takes flak

Man accused of owning too many dogs.

The owner of the dog that was poisoned on January 18 in Ballito (“Owner’s dogs poisoned”, Courier, January 26) has been accused, on social media sites, of owning too many dogs.

Salisbury Drive resident Amir Abbas, who at the time of the story had three adult dogs and four puppies, said that what people did not realise was that he had been looking for homes for the litter of puppies when their mother was poisoned.

Abbas’ dog was allegedly poisoned by a neighbour who is due to appear in court on May 10.

Since then, three of the four German Shepherd puppies have already been found homes, with the fourth still looking for an owner.

“Three of the pups are gone already. I wanted to make sure they went to loving homes,” said Abbas.

According to municipal bylaws in KwaDukuza, a person may keep up to three dogs on a premises, but must have written consent from the municipality to keep more than three.

Other bylaws regarding the keeping of dogs include that people cannot keep dogs that are ferocious, unless they are kept under direct control of the owner or confined so as not to be a danger to lawful visitors. Secondly, people may not keep a dog that creates a nuisance by barking, howling, yelping or whining, or disturbs the general peace of the public.

Complaints about dogs should be registered with the KwaDukuza Municipality Crime Prevention Unit. Contact the Ballito control room on 032-9462711 for more information.
