Worker burns to death in charcoal oven

Charcoal oven claims victim.

A man was killed when he fell into a wood oven this morning at around 7.30am in Newark, near Mandeni.

The oven, located on a dirt road near the Tugela Rail, was being used to burn wood with no oxygen to create charcoal.

IPSS Medical Response arrived at the scene at 7.45am.

“When we arrived on scene we found that the oven was still burning and there was no access to the patient,” said IPSS Medical Response paramedic, Rodney Meyrick.

The Rural Metro Fire department arrived to assist and got the fire under control, but the man who had fallen in had already passed away.

“We contacted SAPS and SAPS Search and Rescue to assist with the recovery of the body. At around 11am the container was deemed safe to enter,” said Meyrick.
