End in sight for N2 Ballito interchange
The project is now about 90 % complete.
The South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has released yet another completion date for the N2 Ballito interchange.
Engineers now estimate the project, which is more than a year behind schedule, will be “substantially complete” by the end of April.
This is two months ahead of the last estimation of an end of June completion.
According to SANRAL the project is about 90 % complete – the north and southbound off and on-ramps, widening and reconstruction of the P445 (Ballito Drive), new bridge over the N2 and new Wakenshaw Estate access road are all more than 80% finished.
Project manager Zandile Nene said the accommodation of heavy traffic volumes during construction has been a constant challenge.
“Traffic is presently being accommodated on the southern half of the new bridge, but will be switched over to the northern half to allow for the paving of the asphalt wearing course, prior to the construction of the bridge joints.”
The P445 (Ballito Drive) widening is underway and traffic flow will be switched from one half to the other during the placing of the asphalt wearing course – a surface treatment which increases the resistance of a concrete pavement.
The expected date of completion for the P445 east upgrade, a separate contract, is November.
