The North Coast Courier Orphan Fund committee met on January 22 to make the Fund’s quarterly allocations. Just under R80 000 was collected during the three months November 2013 to January 2014. The money raised and distributed is reflected in the table below.
We have on-going support and encouragement from England and Wales from the Catholic parishes of Ledbury and Abergavenny, where Virginia Carlton and Father Richard champion the cause of the orphans of the North Coast. They are both regular visitors to our area and have visited some of the projects we support.
The Dolphin Striders contributed further funds from money raised at their annual Medihelp Dolphin Coast Ultra race.
One of the highlights of the last quarter of 2013 was the annual Durban Symphonic Choir concert, held at the Dutch Reformed church in Ballito, which raised over R12,000.
The Ballito Open Golf day was also again a resounding success and thoroughly enjoyed by all who participated. Sincere thanks to all the tee-box and other sponsors.
The Christingle Christmas Eve service for children, organised by All Souls Anglican church, generously donated a collection of R5,266 to the fund.
A special thank you also goes out to all the businesses and individuals who donated presents, stationary, candy canes, clothes and so much more over the last three months. These all contributed to the fund being able to put a smile on a record number of children’s faces over the festive season and into the New Year.
Much of the money that comes to the Orphan Fund is donated anonymously. On an individual level many people have generated a regular stop order against their bank account. We would like to encourage more readers to consider this idea. (North Coast Courier Orphan Fund bank details: ABSA branch: 630229, Acct No: 9109572488).
The money raised by the fund is distributed quarterly to orphan feeding schemes, for food parcels and school bus fare. Help is given to churches and NGOs which are feeding, clothing and caring for orphans. These include St Vincent de Paul in Nkobongo, St Philip in Shakaville and Usizo Kwadukuza in KwaDukuza. Every cent donated goes directly to the charities with the Orphan Fund’s administrative and other costs completely taken care of by the North Coast Courier.
The Orphan Fund is registered as a non-profit organization and has also been approved by the Receiver of Revenue for tax exemption. This means that donors can receive a tax deduction on donations made. The orphan crisis is not just going to go away but each of us can make a difference to lives of children who have nowhere else to turn.
