A song, a smile, a dance

Kids performed Thandi and her Magic Drum at Nkobongo Resource Centre last Friday.

The community of Nkobongo township was treated to a spectacle of colour, music and dance when their kids performed Thandi and her Magic Drum at Nkobongo Resource Centre on Friday, February 28.
The play was part of the The Big Little Caravan of Joy (TBLCJ), an international non-profit arts and culture organisation that works with underprivileged children in Africa.
TBLCJ founder Sarina Condello said the kids think they are just playing but it is through those games that they acquire life skills such as self confidence.
“Whether it be through visual arts, drama or singing, each child goes home empowered in one way or another,” said Condello.
“My team and I have worked with over 3000 children since the first visit in 2005 and nothing gives me greater joy than seeing a child who may have been afraid to even say his name in public, suddenly breaks out in a song at the end of the programme,” said Condello.
TBLCJ worked with Nkobongo children from February 25 until March 1 and centre board member Peter Hodsdon said it was great to see the children come out of their shells during the games.
“We are sad that they have to go because the children were really enjoying their time with the team. We hope they can come back next time they are in the country,” said Hodsdon.
