Ambulance crashes down embankment outside Stanger

Emergency services had to rescue one of their own last night.

An ambulance on its way to a patient in Maphumulo careered off the road and rolled down a steep hill late last night.

The Rival Med ambulance lost control on the R74 just outside Stanger at about 11.30pm in wet conditions.

The passenger medic suffered a fractured arm, while the driver escaped with minor injuries.

The vehicle had rolled about 45 metres down the embankment and IPSS Rescue, Netcare, KDM Fire department, EMRS and Rapid Care used ropes to hall the injured medic from the wreckage.

“Thankfully IPSS rescue had the rescue ropes on hand so we could reach the patients,” said Rapid Care’s Paul Herbst.

The cause of the accident remains subject to police investigation.
