Two men were arrested in Tongaat on Saturday morning after being found in possession of two unlicensed firearms and a stolen vehicle.

According to SAPS media centre’s Colonel Jay Naicker the Tongaat police were on patrol at around 10am when they noticed a suspicious vehicle on Watson Street in Tongaat.

When the officers went to investigate the car the two men fled.

The men, aged 35 and 37, were arrested. A revolver and an AK 47 were seized during the arrest.

The car was checked and was found to have been hijacked from Umlazi township this month.

The seized weapons will be sent for ballistic tests to see if they were used in other crimes.

The pair were charged for possession of suspected stolen property, possession of an unlicensed firearm and car hijacking.

According to Tongaat SAPS Lieutenant Mandy Govender, the men are set to appear in the Verulam Magistrates Court sometime today.

Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, KwaZulu-Natal’s Provincial Commissioner, praised the members for the arrests.

“The seizure of these firearms will decrease the proliferation of illegal firearms and the recovery of the vehicle will assist in linking the suspects in other hijacking cases in the province,” she said.
