Dads and moms-to-be gathered at the Netcare Alberlito Hospital on Saturday where they were geared up for delivery day. Doctors, physiotherapists and other maternity experts spoke to
the parents-to-be about what they should expect.
“We could spend the whole day debating about natural versus caesarian delivery but at the end of the day everyone is different and so are their experiences. Each couple needs to make an informed decision that is safe for them and their baby,” said Dr Nombuso Mthethwa, Alberlito gynaecologist.
She encouraged mothers to ask questions and listen to their doctor’s advice before deciding on natural or caesarean birth.
Physiotherapist, Tarryn Graham stressed the importance of exercising during pregnancy in order to prepare for delivery. She said exercising also helped fast track post delivery recovery for mothers.
“ A s a pregnant w o m a n , you do not want to do anything strenuous but exercises like walking, swimming and even yoga are perfect for expecting mommies. But discuss it with your doctor first,” said Graham.
Early childhood stimulus expert, Natalie Smith, from Ballito’s Top Tots encouraged mothers to enrol their children in programmes that stimulate them on all sensory levels.
Mothers were also taught breathing and pelvic exercises and they went home loaded with goodies. The first 50 moms who booked their delivery with Alberlito on Saturday received free maternnity passports which included luxuries like 4D scans, a romantic dinner for mom and dad, baby registration at home affairs and a baby bag.
