An elderly man from Johannesburg was injured on Tuesday morning when he stumbled into a ditch in the brickwork of the beach promenade in front of The Boulders.
Arthur Atkins’ morning took a turn for the worse when he tripped and broke his hip.
“He was telling me how he had been having such a lovely morning before he fell,” said Riaz Ali, who arrived shortly after Atkins had fallen and helped him to a grassy area nearby with the help of another woman who had been jogging past.
Ali, also from Johannesburg, dashed back to his complex to call an ambulance.
“Netcare 911 was very efficient, I was so impressed. They were fully prepared, got down here and put him on a stretcher in no time,” he said.
Ali said the ditch is dangerous, especially at night when there is very little light.
“This is bad, because a lot of elderly people come here to walk or jog. When an old person falls it could take them weeks or months to recover,” said Ali.
