A well of generosity

A Salt Rock local has some innovative ideas to save water.

Ballito’s recent water restrictions reminded us that water is a precious resource not to be wasted.
But a Salt Rock mum and her family have long been saving every drop they can, using innovative ideas to be as kind as they can to the environment.
“It is not as complicated as one would think. It really comes down to just being sensible and finding a method that works for you,” said Wendy Oelofse.
The Courier visited the Oelofse home during  National Water Week, March 17 to 23.
Wendy and her husband Cobus built their beautiful home from scratch and designed it to contribute to the cause. The roof is sloped to collect rainwater from a central gutter and stores it in a 10 000 litre tank under the driveway.
“We use this water for irrigation, filling the pool and washing the cars. We also run the water from the washing machine into a drum, which is used to water the garden.”
The flat roof of their garage formed the perfect spot for an impressive veggie garden, where everything from mint, fennel, spinach and brinjal to cucumber, butternut, tomatoes, artichokes and peppadews grow – all watered with recycled water.
Wendy’s attitude of looking after the environment also clearly extends to caring for the community she lives in.
In an act of generosity to passers by, she has planted a ‘friendship’ garden along the perimeter of their property.
“Anyone who walks by is most welcome to pick up some veggies,” said Wendy.
Another water-wise facets of their home include, installing toilets with smaller cisterns and a dual flush mechanism and aerated shower heads and taps.
Wendy believes saving water should not be a difficult task.
“I would encourage all families to try it out. Once you get into it, you will find there is nothing to saving water.”
