Missing Sheffield man found

A Sheffield resident who went missing on Sunday was found this morning on the beach near Tinley Manor.

A missing Sheffield Beach resident was found unconscious next to the Umhlali river mouth this morning.

Emergency services were called out last night to look for Derek Griesel (53), who was reported missing by his mother.

IPSS medical services and Rapid Care started their search last night and scoured the beach from Sheffield towards Tinley Manor before they called off the search for the night.

“We started our search again early this morning. While we were walking we found him on the rocks,” said IPSS medical response paramedic, Rodney Meyrick.

A microlight was used to help with the search but the pilot saw no sign of the missing man. IPSS also had police search and rescue as well as NSRI on standby to help with the search.

The team had to drive about a kilometer up the beach to where Griesel was still unconscious. Tinley Manor resident Lourens Haasbroek helped the team get Griesel to the ambulance with the use of his bakkie.

“We are lucky we have the support of the community around here, it helps so much,” said Meyrick.

Griesel was taken to Alberlito hospital for treatment.
