Saturday club gets a special visitor
Miss Ballito Shelley Buckle spreads light and love in Shakashead.
Miss Ballito Shelley Buckle visited the Padayachee Saturday Club last weekend. Shelley shared her inspirational story of being born deaf but not allowing it to dictate how she lived her life.
She also taught the enthusiastic club members how to say a few words in SA Sign Language.
The club was started by the Zimbali Rotary Club in October 2011 on the RA Padayachee School grounds, teaching children artwork. “The vision for the club is to broaden their knowledge, given them confidence and have fun at the same time. We discuss topics like human rights, peace, looking after the environment, bullying and drug abuse,” said Rotary’s Hillary Hunter.
The children sang and recited speeches for Shelley, who encouraged them never to give up on their dreams.
“I honestly believe there is nothing you cannot do if you believe you can do it.” Hunter said the group is full of wonderful, confident children.
“Occasionally we have movies, outings to the beach and ice cream treats at a local café. We would appreciate any help from the public to give their time and expertise on Saturday mornings, especially in music, drama, hobbies and art. Donations of children’s books , games, puzzles and art equipment would always be gratefully received.”
