Jolly good on ya, mate!

A Ballito lifesaver’s bravery, while on duty in Australia, has earned him a national award.

Janek Ferrandi helped rescue three surfers off Yallingup Beach some 250 kilometres south of Perth on January 10.

The 22-year-old young man has spent the past four peak seasons (November to January) working for Surf Life Saving Australia.

“My mate Ben Sowter was walking on patrol and told me to keep an eye on three guys who were jumping into the water off the rocks with their surfboards. They got washed out and into trouble,” said Ferrandi.

Sowter and Ferrandi both quickly grabbed their rescue boards and paddled out to help the surfers back to shore.

Conditions were dangerous and the rip so strong that the lifeguards themselves struggled to get back with the surfers in tow.

Ferrandi managed to paddle back to the beach alone to call a jet ski from a nearby beach.

When he was unable to get an answer, he paddled back out again.

The rip took them some 800 metres further down the beach before they were able to get back to shore.

Following the rescue, Ferrandi was told that he was going to be nominated for the national rescue of the month.

“It was really cool to get nominated. Lifesaving is really big over there, the equipment is top notch and before each season you have to do classes for a week.”

He is now back in Ballito running his own business. He will not be able to receive his award in person, which was going to be presented by Australian prime minister, Tony Abbott.

Ferrandi hopes to pick up his award this December if he makes the trip for another season on Australia’s beaches.
