Journey to the roof of Africa

Two Ballito residents are documenting their journey ahead of arguably the hardest enduro motorcross ride in the world – the Roof of Africa.
This, Southern Africa’s premier off-road motorcycle race, is to be held in Lesotho from November 13 to 16.
Tim Hay, owner of Hellmot Productions and his friend Nicholas Stanissis have decided to film their journey as amateur riders.
Hay is filming and editing footage of their training sessions and interviews as they prepare for the challenge. The footage is being used to make episodes which have already featured in the Two Wheels show on Supersport
“Each episode is basically a little story of the build up to ride,” said Hay.
The pair also plans to donate the money they raise to Hearts that Hope children’s home in Salt Rock.
“Having done some of the video for Hearts that Hope’s website, we felt it was a great place to support. Hearts that Hope will receive 10 % of the money we make,” said Hay.
Although riding seems like a load of fun, Hay and Stanissis have an extreme training programme.
“We have been training with Russel White, he has been killing us! He has us on a training program, but the main thing is saddle time, we have to ride as much as we can.”
They train four times a week and ride for six hours on both Saturdays and Sundays.
“We basically learned from scratch and when we started riding we would often be so fatigued afterwards. But it is nice to have a partner like Nic, we like to chirp each other but also push one another to keep going.”
Hay hopes that the wide variety of training they are doing from gym, cycling and hypoxic (low oxygen) training, will have them in the right shape to take on the gruelling race.
So far the hard work has paid off and they have received a lot of support from other riders in the area, some of whom saw their show on Supersport.
“So many guys have phoned and asked us to come and ride with them, which is really great.”
Hay and Stanissis have had some help from sponsors but are hoping for more people to get involved.
“We have Travis Beattie fixing our bikes and motorcross legend Alfie Cox has hooked us up with decals (stickers) on our bikes. Alfie might also sponsor us 2015 KTM’s for the enduro.”
