Woman shot in second round of taxi violence

Public urged to stay away from rank

A 23-year-old woman was seriously wounded in a second round of shooting at the Stanger taxi rank this morning.

The woman was sitting in a taxi when she was shot in her abdomen.

Shooting started up again this morning after one person was wounded yesterday, when security guards from rival taxi associations opened fire at each other.

Gunshots rang throughout the central business district from around 9am this morning, sending commuters scattering and forcing business owners to close their doors in fear of their safety.

One commuter, who did not want to be named, said she was near the U-Save Supermarket at the rank when she heard gunshots.

“A BMW with a Richards’ Bay registration plate was parked opposite the rank and five people were shooting from the car. We were so scared because it came out of nowhere. Now, we have been told that taxis are hiding all over the CBD so we are not safe anywhere.”

KwaDukuza SAPS, Umhlali SAPS and KwaDukuza traffic department officers  have cordoned off the rank and EMRS vehicles are on standby. The rank has temporarily been closed.

KwaZulu-Natal SAPS media liaison officer captain Thulani Zwane said officers will stay at the rank until the situation is safe, but the public is advised to stay away from the area.
