MEC intervenes in Stanger taxi violence

Rival taxi associations are fighting over control of the route between Darnall and Stanger.

Transport MEC Willies Mchunu has sent a team of negotiators to meet with taxi bosses following two outbreaks of shooting in Stanger, last week.

The MEC expressed his displeasure at Friday morning’s shooting, in which a 23-year-old woman was shot in her abdomen while waiting for a taxi.

Commuters and business owners had to take cover when a group of men opened fire at the open rank at around 11am.

The previous night at about 6pm shots were fired at the rank but no injures were reported.

The KwaDukuza and KwaMaphumulo taxi associations are believed to be fighting for control of the route between Darnall and Stanger.

A closed meeting between the associations, transport department and provincial SAPS is taking place today.

“The rank is still being monitored by police officers and should be safe for commuters. Still, we ask that everyone stay alert and vigilant” said KZN media liaison captain Thulani Zwane.
