Soap box derby roars through Ballito
And away they go!
‘Mister Sun’ came out to say hello just in time for the 28th annual Lions soap box derby on Saturday.
Hawkins Road was transformed into any child’s (and some adults) dream track, with loud shrieks and squeals of delight echoing as participants roared down towards the beach.
Ballito Lions president Paul Naidoo was thrilled with the turn out.
“We could only plan the event and hope the weather played along, which it did, in a big way. It is always amazing to see the community come together like this and we are very grateful for all the support. All of today’s proceeds will be put toward the various charities we support.”
This was also the first year the event was hosted in partnership with the KwaDukuza municipality, coinciding with the ‘Ballito has a good story to tell’ campaign.
KDM’s Mzozi Mthembu said Ballito has had R100m invested into its electrical infrastructure over the past 20 years. R380m is currently being spent on the N2 interchange.
“Ballito has been a major driving force behind economic growth in KZN and events like this one help us put it on the map. We are looking at making the derby bigger next year so we can reach more people,” she said.
