The one that got away…
A Dusky shark had to be rescued from the tidal pool in Salt Rock.
An unlucky shark had to be rescued by community members after it was trapped in the main Salt Rock tidal pool on Tuesday.
With the help of a few Dolphin Coast Honorary officers and equipment from Ballito’s Specialised Rescue unit, the group worked together to catch the small dusky shark.
A handful of brave locals got into the pool and shepherded the shark into a corner. It was caught with a net and released back into the ocean.
According to Specialised Rescue’s Quentin Power, the shark had been caught by fishermen and released into the pool.
Although nobody saw the incident, Power insisted that the shark could not have gotten into the pool by itself.
He said there have been previous incidents where fishermen had caught sharks and released them into the pool.
“In the past, fisherman used to do this at Thompson’s tidal pool. The ones who were caught doing it said the shark kept taking their bait and if they threw it in the pool, they would not lose all their bait,” he said.
This little shark was lucky enough to be rescued.
“If the shark was left in the pool it would have probably died,” he said.
