Fishermen rescue themselves off Salmon Bay

The NSRI was alerted when a small fishing boat got into trouble off Ballito this morning.

Two men in a small boat were rescued off Salmon Bay, at Ballito, after their engine failed this morning.

Rapid Care’s Paul Herbst said KwaDukuza lifeguards dispatched a jet-ski from Salt Rock after a call from the NSRI alerted them to the emergency.

“Shortly after the fishermen launched their single engined semi ridged rubber duck the engine had failed and they contacted the NSRI,” said Herbst.

Rapid Care, IPSS Medical Rescue, Specialsed Rescue and the NSRI all arrived to assist if needed.

Specialised Rescue’s Quentin Power said the men managed to paddle their boat to back line themselves and a man on a paddle ski came over to assist.

“The lifeguards arrived but at that point the skipper managed to get the craft going again. They beached the craft with myself standing on the sand directing them with a flag.

“The guys from the ski boat club, the skipper, his crew and myself then winched the craft up the slipway.” said Power.

There were no injuries or damage to the rubber duck.
