Road works on the N2 highway between the Tongaat toll plaza and the Umdloti off-ramp are officially behind schedule.

In July last year the project was set back after a number of staff were laid-off due to an informal strike. This led to a protest by other members of the workforce. In total 225 workers were dismissed for being involved in informal strikes.

According to SANRAL project manager Ravi Ronny this set the project back.

“Labour had to be re-employed and this caused a delay of about two months,” he said.

Ronny said the road works that run from the toll gate to Umdloti are set to be completed in July, while the expansion of the Umdloti River bridge should be finished in December.

The project was originally meant to be completed on April 20.

“Both bridges (North bound carriageway and South bound carriageway) are being widened on the outside to create four lanes each way. The method being used is incremental launching,” said Ronny.

Following the reemployment of staff, there are 535 people working on the project.

The overall cost of the road upgrade is approximately R477,2 million.
