The e-Toll gantries that riled up Gauteng are on their way to KwaZulu-Natal.
This was announced at the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) media round table breakfast in Durban yesterday.
The e-Tag lanes will first be installed at Marianhill and Oribi Toll Plazas within the next six months, following which Sanral will evaluate installation throughout the rest of KZN.
But Sanral executives were quick to quell fears that e-Tolling would become a mandatory payment option in KZN.
Spokesman Vusi Mona said manual payment by cash, petrol or debit card would still be available to KZN motorists at toll gates.
“But there are many motorists who will wish to save time and take advantage of the convenience of e-Tolling.”
The e-Toll system will increase efficiency at toll gates by allowing up to 700 vehicles to be processed every hour, compared to 300 an hour when using manual payment.
The KZN e-Tag lanes will still have boom gates, unlike the Gauteng gantries. Drivers will slow down to 40kmph and allow their e-tag to be scanned before the boom gate will lift. If your e-tag payments are not up to date the boom gate will not lift.
There are also plans to introduce a dedicated lane for e-tagged motorists in the future.
Sanral has not announced when e-Tags will become available in KwaZulu-Natal.
