Holidaymakers save injured Gannet
Two Pretoria residents rescued a Cape Gannet in Ballito.
Pretoria residents, Haneli Seiling and Adriëtte-Odette de Waal, saved the life of an injured Cape Gannet bird on Friday, May 16.
The mother and daughter, while in Ballito on holiday, found the bird on the beach across from their holiday home.
“We were sitting having our early morning coffee when we spotted a Gannet just sitting on the beach not moving at all,” said de Waal.
They decided to investigate.
“We thought it was very strange that this bird had not moved for quite some time. Especially since this bird is referred to as the crazy goose of the sea,” she said.
They quickly realised that the bird could not walk or fly and phoned the Ballito SPCA. Inspector Debbie Filmater was there to help within ten minutes.
The mother and daughter assisted the inspector in capturing and transporting the bird to the Ballito Vet Hospital.
Upon examination Dr Kevin Stevenson found that the bird had a damaged wing and leg, which he treated.
The Cape Gannet has since been picked up by and taken to the Durban Bird Sanctuary where its injuries will be continued to be cared for.
