Dreaming, believing, achieving at Alberlito Hospital
The 12th annual Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Day campaign.
Hundreds of companies around South Africa took part in the 12th annual Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work Day campaign on Thursday, May 29.
Since its launch in 2003 the campaign, targeted and grade 10, 11 and 12 female pupils, gives girls the opportunity to spend a day in workplaces ranging from hotels to hospitals.
President Jacob Zuma and public protector advocate Thuli Mandonsela were some of the high-profile public figures who hosted girls under this year’s theme: Dream, Believe, Achieve.
On the North Coast Netcare Alberlito Hospital invited girls from Stanger Manor Secondary, Nonhlevu Secondary, Seatides Combined, Shakaskraal Secondary, Destiny Life Academy and Swanvale Primary Schools.
Sister Vasi Govindsamy said the girls were exposed to a variety of career opportunities in a hospital setting, including finance, marketing, gynaecology and psychology.
“We wanted them to see that not only doctors work at a hospital. There is a world of opportunity out there for them. It was wonderful spending the day with a group of girls who have such different backgrounds and vivid dreams,” said Govindsamy.
Stanger Manor Secondary’s Serina Kistan, who wants to be a physiotherapist, thoroughly enjoyed the day.
Seatides Combined pupil Lisa Singh said the workshop had been fulfilling.
“I want to be a doctor so I appreciated the time we spent walking through the wards,” said Singh.
Luleka Nomgca and Rosanna Nkosi, who both want to be nurses, thanked Alberlito for accommodating them.
“We had many questions and they were all answered today, which was awesome!”
