A man allegedly jumped out of a moving vehicle to escape from two hijackers in Tongaat today.

The incident was brought to the Courier’s attention by a message broadcast to the Courier’s Blackberry.

According to Tongaat SAPS media liaison Lieutenant Mandy Govender, the Tongaat resident had claimed to have picked up his maid before driving towards Verulam.

“Along the way, he was stopped and hijacked by two men with knobkierries. The attackers forced him and the maid into the back of the car and drove down the R102 towards Verulam.

“They pulled off on a dirt road at which point the man jumped out of the car. The hijackers continued driving with the maid inside the car,” said Govender.

After opening a case at Tongaat SAPS, the vehicle was found abandoned further down the road.

“There was no sign of the missing woman or any suspects,” said Govender.

According to Govender, Tongaat SAPS were contacted by victim’s maid, who was in Hambanathi and claimed to have not been in the car with her employer..

“He told us that he had gone to pick up a new maid. Nobody knows who the woman is, he does not know her name or any details,” said Govender.

Reaction Unit South Africa assisted with a search but called it off once the maid had called Tongaat SAPS.

The hijackers and the missing woman have not been found.
