Killed for his cellphone
Well-known local martial arts expert stabbed twice in Tongaat
The family of a well-known local martial arts specialist is reeling after his murder.
Fairbreeze, Tongaat resident Tyson Murugan (24) was attacked and murdered, apparently for his cellphone, while walking home along Gopalall Hurbans Road on Tuesday night.
He was apparently on his way home from eating at a local café, after a workout session, when he was stabbed in the chest and stomach and left for dead.
Police suspect Murugan, who was trained in self-defence and professional street-fighting, may have been caught off guard because he was listening to music through his cellphone headset when he was attacked around 7pm.
His family was called to identify his body after neighbours alerted them of the incident.
Murugan was one of the first South Africans to train in Defence Lab techniques – an overseas organisation that teaches highly specialised fighting and martial arts techniques.
He had been abroad for training and would have qualified as a Defence Lab instructor at the end of the year.
He had done several demos in and around Ballito, Tongaat and Stanger and was also known for his love of stunt choreography and acting.
He recently produced and choreographed for his own film, The Cobra. Messages of tribute have poured in via FaceBook.
KZN SAPS media liaison captain Thulani Zwane said the motive for Murugan’s murder is unknown and investigations are continuing.
No arrests have been made.
