Music changes everything
The Bongimfundo Primary School sextet took first place in KZN in the SA Schools Choral Eisteddfod.
“If music be the food of love, play on.”
The famous words of William Shakespeare ring especially true for the talented boys and girls who make up the Bongimfundo Primary School choir.
The sextet beat the odds to achieve first place in KZN in the SA Schools Choral Eisteddfod, held at Durban Playhouse recently.
The tiny school, nestled in the sugar cane fields near Zinkwazi, was the only choir in the Ilembe district to be placed.
The beautiful sounds of flawless three-part harmony during their performance of prescribed piece ‘Drink To Me Only (With Thine Eyes)’ scored them 65 points.
“We are a small school and not many know of us and the challenges we face. Our children were up first, against many other schools that have more than we do. But when I heard them sing, I could not have been more proud,” said music teacher and choir conductress Nelly Maphalala.
Maphalala said music teaches the children discipline and reminds them that, although they come from disadvantaged backgrounds, they must not allow others to look down upon them.
Principal Pitamber Ramgathi wished the sextet well for the Eisteddfod nationals, taking place at the Dome in Durban on July 8.
